Zazuo Fm base reconstruction

Zazuo Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Late Cretaceous, K2zz, (40)

Province:
Guizhou

Type Locality and Naming

Guihou – central. The Guizhou Regional Geological Survey Team erected the Zazuo Group in 1980. The section for the designation is at Gaoba of Zazuo of the Xiuwen County of Guizhou.

Lithology and Thickness

The Zazuo Formation mainly represents the two rhythms that are from coarse to fine, consisting of brick-red conglomerate, gravel-bearing sandstone and mudstone. The Zazuo Formation is 134.6 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base of the formation marked by brick-red massive conglomerate is distinguished from the underlying Cambrian Leishanguan Gr marked by gray white moderately thick-bedded aplitic dolomite. It shows an angular discordance with the underlying strata.

Upper contact

The top is an angular discordance to the appearance of brick-red thick-bedded sandy conglomerate at the base of the Jiuzhou Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in Zazuo of Xiuwen, Jiuzhou of Huangping, Yuhui, Shibing and Rongjiang of south Guizhou. It is quite persistent in lithology and varies considerably in thickness, from 90 to 921 m. It shows an angular discordance with the Pre-Cretaceous, except in the Rongjiang basin where it is in disconformable contact with the Kuangjiawan Fm.
